Description

I've decided to take a break from creatures in Palkragar, and decided to do a few creatures from the less developed Lysende Verden. Now, I know I said that that heart's apex predator was Neoacrocanthosaurus, but I wanted to mix things up a bit. I present to you the largest of the confirmed Stem Birds.

Titanonychus is the largest predator in the North Eastern Heart of North America. At about 40ft from head to tail and weighing a whopping 5.6 tons, this animal is comparable in size to a T rex. But it's not a tyrannosaur. Looking at the claw that gave the beast its name, we can confirm that this is a member of the raptor family. It's a giant Dromaeosaur to be exact.

Despite the beast's reputation as that of "The Eagle King", by the locals, this creature is more like a mix between an eagle and a bear. The giant is omnivorous, having a taste for both meat and vegetable. The creature is one of the few theropods to exhibit a form of heterodontism. That being that the animal has different types of teeth for different purposes. These include a front set of knife like incisors, canines similar in shape of a tyrannosaur tooth, and a set of serated teeth behind them that become thicker as you get further into the mouth. This, combined with some powerful jaws, enables Titanonychus to exploit a wide diversity of food sources.

Giantism is not something that has occured long ago for this genus. It came about relativly recently, and as a result, this dinosaur still retains some aspects from it's ancestors. The giant, sicle shaped claw, although used in some applications, has largly become vestigial. This dinosaur now favoring to use is hands and jaws to kill its prey. It's not known if, after some time has passed in evolutionary terms, whether the claw will disappear or not.

Like some modern birds, these creatures live in life long pairbonds. A male makes a claim over a territory, and takes in the first acceptable female that passes by. The female is mostly responcible for egglaying, nest construction, and maintanence. The male, however, is responcible for guarding the territory, and protecting kills from scavengers and theives. But both have a duty to provide food for themselves, and eachother. And above all else, guarding the offspring.
